We’ve gone through a lot this past year, especially the single community. Not only was there a pandemic, but single people had to learn a completely different way to date. As if the dating world wasn’t hard enough, now it’s all online and that comes with its own dating writing challenges.
The dating game has changed, and while everyone was busy figuring out 2020, let’s make 2021 the year of romance. Not all of us are experts in dating writing, but that’s why I’m here. Here’s how to write a dating profile in 2021.
What are people doing wrong?
Okay, before I tell you what you should be doing, you need to know what you shouldn’t be doing.
You’re not given a lot of characters to use on most dating apps, so people feel pressured to stand out among the rest by writing something clever to gain attention. But that’s not what you should do with dating writing.
Trying to be witty or clever won’t work in your favor. If anything, it’ll come off as forced, and no one likes that. Your profile isn’t meant to attract hundreds of people; it’s meant to attract those you may have a connection with.
Dating Writing: 7 Steps to Follow
By trying to be someone else or a “better” version of yourself, you’re hindering your online dating experience. So, what can you do instead?
Take a breath and reflect
First of all, take a deep breath. This is online dating, not the Olympics. It’s easy to get sucked into things and overwhelmed with what to write or what photo to use, but this experience should be a light-hearted one.
So, take a deep breath and spend ten minutes reflecting on your past relationships and the things you want and don’t want in the future.
Use your photos
Images can show a lot about a person, more than words. Use your photos as a part of dating writing to show people more about yourself.
If you like animals take a photo with your dog. If you like traveling, show a photo with you in an exotic location. Use your photos to continue telling your story.
Be clear about what you want
What do you want from your dating experience? With dating writing, it works best when you have a clear idea of your needs.
You want people to read your profile and swipe on you if they’re on the same page as you. If not, it’s just a waste of time. Be open and honest about what you want, who you are, and the lifestyle you live.
Add a narrative
Everyone likes a good story. Of course, people aren’t looking for a fairytale, but a narrative gives people a visual of who you are. Dating writing is about storytelling.
So, instead of saying, “I love to Netflix and Chill,” write, “my favorite Friday nights are when I’m curled up on the couch binge-watching Ru Paul’s Drag Race with home-made vegan pizza.” By saying this, they get more of a sense of who you are and what you like.
Make your profile about you
Of course, you want to attract people to your profile, but your profile shouldn’t be about them. Your profile is about you.
We all have our expectations for the type of partner we would like, but you need to let go of those ideas. If not, you’ll write a profile that won’t be true to yourself; rather, it’ll fit the agenda of the type of person you want to be with.
Go at your own pace
This past year has been a challenging one, so there’s no rush to jump into things. Take your time and understand the process of finding a partner isn’t an easy one.
Reflect on your feelings and make sure that you’re dating because you want to, not because you’re feeling pressured by family or social expectations.
Be yourself
I cannot express this enough. When dating writing, you need to stay true to yourself. Because, let’s be honest, you want to meet people who like you, not the person who they think you are.
So, practice authenticity when writing your profile, and you’ll meet like-minded people.
Dating writing isn’t easy, especially when it’s on your own dating profile. However, it shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Follow these dating profile writing tips, and you’ll be well on your way to meeting new people.
